Coffee. Just hearing this word makes many people's mouths water! Whether black, with coffee cream, oat milk or sugar: coffee is a ubiquitous cult drink that is consumed both at home from a cup and on the go from a coffee mug. Coffee is generally known as a wake-up drink. But what is really behind this reputation of the trendy drink? Whether it is consumed in disposable coffee cups, in a restaurant or at home: most coffee drinkers are chronic connoisseurs. As soon as even just one cup of coffee is consumed daily, the brain gets used to the regular coffee intake. At night, a kind of mini-withdrawal from the ingredients of the cult drink can occur while you sleep, which contributes to a feeling of tiredness. If you then drink coffee from an environmentally friendly cup on the way to work in the morning, this has a slightly positive effect on alertness.

However, these positive effects are relatively small when coffee is consumed daily. Above all, regular coffee drinking feels like it promotes alertness and motivation because we like drinking coffee and associate positive feelings with it . Coffee has a stronger demonstrable effect on alertness, especially when it is not consumed daily. After just four days of "abstinence", the human body becomes more sensitive to those substances in the trendy drink that have a direct effect on alertness. Of course, the amount of other caffeinated drinks consumed in the same period also plays a role.

Disposable coffee cups and coffee at home: ideal consumption?

Everyone has to decide for themselves what ideal coffee consumption should look like! Physical reactions to the drink, which basically wakes you up, occur especially with irregular consumption. But enjoying delicious coffee is fun and makes you happy. Feelings of happiness do not necessarily stimulate alertness, but they have been proven to increase motivation. When we get up in the morning and prepare ourselves for the day with a cup of coffee, it is often more about motivation for work. Therefore, our - non-medical - recommendation is: Regular coffee drinkers should not be put off.
