In Germany, certain single-use plastic items have been banned since July 3, 2021. This also includes single-use plastic drinking cups! Reusable plastic cups, on the other hand, are still allowed because reusable products, although made of plastic, save material and resources through reuse.

It is still possible to buy plastic cups in many regions, but there is a growing awareness of more sustainable alternatives. Many manufacturers now only offer environmentally friendly alternatives. These are permitted by law because they are made from recycled plastic and can themselves be recycled optimally - this saves material and protects the environment.

According to publications by the Federal Environment Agency, consumers use around 70 disposable cups per person each year for soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and hot drinks. This adds up to around 3 billion disposable cups each for hot and cold drinks. Almost 6 billion disposable cups are used for out-of-home consumption in Germany every year!

Many paper cups have a thin plastic coating, which is why they often end up in the general waste, even though they are mostly made from the renewable raw material paper. We therefore recommend that you either distribute rPET cups to your customers, as these can be recycled very easily. Or you can use paper cups without a coating - these are even biodegradable and therefore particularly environmentally friendly.

The recyclability of plastic cups depends on the type of plastic they are made from. Most plastic cups can be recycled, but reusable plastic cups are particularly good for protecting the environment, as rinsing and cleaning the cups uses far less material and water than recycling and making new cups.
